Sometimes, we blog about pretty technical stuff. And someone recently commented that a lot of it goes right over his head. So we thought we’d simplify things a little bit with this post about the absolute basics of good web design. These are the things you should consider before anything else. If you want a site that’s easy to navigate and uber-user-friendly, these are the eight most important things to keep in mind:
1. Visitors to your site should be able to quickly and easily identify information pertinent to them, and access that information from multiple navigational angles.
2. Typographical hierarchy (text variations in size, bolding or colour) should be used to guide readers to important content).
3. Graphics should illustrate as well as inform. (Never throw in a photograph just for the sake of having one.)
4. Always optimize your graphics (i.e., make sure they’re a small file size) so that they load quickly.
5. The best pages are interesting, but simple and uncluttered.
6. Make the most important elements of your site the most visually prominent.
7. Position related elements close to each other so users can easily associate them in an instant.
8. Use white space to visually organize the page, to emphasize important elements and to give users’ eyes some rest. These tips may seem obvious to some, but you’d be surprised how many websites fail to take them into account. Keep them in mind when starting out and you’ll be well on your way to a site that works.
There. Consider the process simplified.
